Incredible Race
Hello. We're doing the incredible race for our daycamp (6 weeks, 3 days a week). I haven't received the materials yet, but have started to think about it. At the Family Christian store I found an animated "auto" video which we may show during a miscellaneous time. Also found a website with lots of racing stuff for decorating. http://www.kipptoys.com/ProductBrows...ID=239&SID=419

Things are moving fast and furious here. This is what we've done so far. We bought a lot of things for decorating etc. from Oriental Trading. My husband picked up 2 refrigerator boxes today and following the directions in the director's handbook made us 2 really cool racecars. My sons are going crazy over them. He made a few modifications that will make them work better for us. Using the format from kristyleanne I created a tri-fold brochure about VBS and the carnival and had it printed today. Since printing was going to be so expensive we had the outside printed in color and on the inside we used black and white clipart so it wasn't so obvious that we didn’t print the inside in color. Our church is having a carnival the Saturday before VBS to try and attract more children. We're such a small church and we've really stepped out on faith that God will bring the children in. Many of the regular carnival games I've adapted to relate to racing. I may even wear the refrigerator box racecar around the carnival…who knows what may happen! One of our church members found a blow up pool float thing that looks like a racecar at BigLots. There's a lot of hype right now about the movie Cars that will be coming out the week before VBS. My husband and I will preview it and see if it's appropriate for our children. If so, we may use movie tickets as prizes for memory work, attendance, and/or bringing a friend. We're also considering taking a large group after our Parent Night activities. We'll just have to wait and see.
If anyone has anymore ideas please share! |

Amazing how fast the time is approaching! Yikes! i will have to hit Big Lots to look for that pool float. How long did it take you to make the cardboard racecars? I just want to know what I'm getting myself into. And, if you check out Cars, let me know. It's on my list of things to do predaycamp, but I'm also moving, so we'll see. We go for 6 weeks, T, W & Th, and on Thursdays we go on a field trip. Trying to decide if that would be a good movie to take all the kids to.

Hi! We are doing "The Incredible Race" as well, for a 5 day VBS. Has anybody made the full size Otto costume, and is it difficult to make? We are trying to get a real race car to sit out on the front lawn of the Church for passerbys to see. I could use any suggestions any of you would have. Our VBS is the second week in August.

Cars was a really cute and clean movie. I took my 4yr. old to see it, and he enjoyed it. Plus, they gave all the kids a package of racing cards. He really liked that!

We did not make the Otto costume, but we did wear the refrigerator box race car. My husband made a few adjustments and one of those was cutting a square in the bottom so that you could stand up inside and actually hold and walk with it.
We had a real race car and driver come to our kick off event. It was a huge success. The driver put the children inside and let them try on his things. We took pictures of each child individually and told them to come back during VBS to get their pictures. We then used the pictures for the craft that Oriental Trading has. Our VBS went GREAT and the children (even girls) were very excited about the theme. Since our VBS was only 5 days, we're considering using the other 5 days in a year or two. We saved everything! Something else we did that worked well, is we got a bulletin board set that had race cars and we used it for memory work, attendance, and bringing a friend. Each time they would move forward and the kids really worked to move ahead. We ended up having a 3 way tie. The 3 received grand prizes and we were all winners! We are a small church so I was able to order the religious novelty set from Oriental and give small prizes each day...every child chose a prize every day, depending on how many of the 3 things they did. If there is anything I can do for anyone, please let me know! |

Hi Ministry Friends,
I am launchign the Incredible Race in about 2 weeks. Do you have any incredible tips, advice etc to provide for me as I start this adventure. It sounds like fun and the curriculum looks like so much. Any great advice especially in terms of decor would be much appreciated. Blessings Pastor Lisa |

incredible race
For decorating, we used the track and stands background the book suggestions across the big back wall. We then hung an inflatable race car (which was a floatie we got from Big Lots) to look like it was racing on the track. It looked really cool. I asked a church member if he had anything that I could use to decorate the stage and within an hour he returned with so many things...some of which I had no idea what they were but he explained. If I don't get the names right...sorry. He gave us a jack, things you put under a car to keep it up once you lift it (they were 4 trapezoid looking things), oil and transmission cans that had never been opened, clean gas cans, red ramps that you would use to load a car onto something, one of those things you lay on to role under a car, old tires, the thing you use to remove a tire, and lots of other things. We put the refrigerator car up on those 4 things, stacked the tires, opened up a big tool box and strung tools all over the stage. We ended up leaving the stage like that a week after VBS because it was fathers day and it fit the message. Outside when you walked into the church I hung the triangle checkered flag strands and a welcome race fans banner. We used the little flags that came in the kit along the pews. We used several of those flag strands through the gym and fellowship hall. The memory verses were enlarged and hung up in the snack room for the children to work on while snacking. As previously mentioned, we used a bulletin board set for memory work/visitor/attendance racing. That's all I can remember right now, if I think of anything else I'll write and if you need clarification on anything please write me.

The Incredible Race
We are using the Incredible Race VBS for a boys small group. I am having some trouble finding the kit as we are now into The Plunge. Does anyone know how I can buy last year's VBS? And do you know if plans to make the cardboard racecar are included or where to find them? Thank you in advance for your time!!!
